Best Optical Illusion of the Year Named

By    |   Wednesday, 11 October 2017 05:21 AM

The best optical illusion of the year, according to the Nueral Correlate Society, comes from a video nominated by engineering professors from Tel Aviv University.

Hedva Spitzer, Dana Tearosh, and Niv Weisman, of the School of Electrical Engineering at the Tel Aviv University, won first place for the video "Shape from Motion Only," the Nueral Correlate Society wrote in a statement.

The phenomenon 'Shape from Motion Only' presented in its purest form in the video i.e., the information is only in the temporal domain, without any clues in the spatial domain," the authors wrote in their description of the video, per the Nueral Correlate Society. "Both the object and the background are created by flashing the pixels on and off, while the only difference is expressed in the temporal properties.

"We examined various properties of the phenomenon such as: statistics and object size. Furthermore, we examined how several known optical illusions like 'Rubin’s Vase' might occur using this temporal phenomenon. This research has the potential to open a hatch for better understanding the visual system mechanisms," the authors continued.

The Neural Correlate Society is a nonprofit that promotes "new discoveries related to the neural correlates of sensory and cognitive experience," according to the website Thrillist.

"How we see the outside world – our perception – is generated indirectly by brain mechanisms and so all perception is illusory to some extent," the society wrote last year, the Thrillist stated.

"The study of illusions is critical to how we understand sensory perception, and many ophthalmic and neurological diseases."

The society selected the top 10 illusions and asked the public to pick the top illusion from the 10.

Scientific American magazine wrote that the society's contest this year coincided with the release of the book "Champions of Illusion: The Science Behind Mind-Boggling Images and Mystifying Brain Puzzles."

The book highlights some of the best illusion entries from past contests and their "neural underpinnings," wrote Scientific American.
