Supermodel Bella Hadid talked recently about her refugee father’s Muslim faith and said she was proud to be a Muslim.

Hadid, who has spoken out against President Donald Trump’s travel ban against several Muslim countries, told Porter magazine that her father, real estate mogul Mohamed Hadid, raised his children as Muslims and prayed with them when they were growing up, Fox News reported.

“He was always religious, and he always prayed with us. I am proud to be a Muslim,” Bella told the magazine, according to Us Weekly. Mohamed was born in Israel and moved from Syria to the United States when he was 14.

He married Bella’s mother Yolanda, but they split up when Bella was 3. Yolanda has appeared on “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”

The supermodel, known for some rather racy photo shoots, was criticized on Twitter for her comments because of the way many Muslim societies treat women and the extreme modesty with which they expect Muslim women to dress.

A few Twitter users defended Hadid’s comments.
