Beer rationing has begun in the U.K. due to a shortage of food-grade carbon dioxide across Europe.

While the problem is widespread in Europe, it is most severe in the U.K., where only one ammonia plant where the CO2 is produced is operating normally, CNN Money reported.

U.K. wholesaler Booker told CNN it is limiting bars and grocers to 10 cases of each brand of beer per day, or about 300 cans per brand. Hard cider and soda supplies may also be impacted, although Coca-Cola in Europe says supplies of soft drinks are still at normal levels.

“We are currently working hard with our suppliers to minimize the impact for our customers and to optimize availability with the stock that is available,” a Booker spokesperson said, The Guardian reported.

Food-grade CO2 also is used in meat production to stun animals before slaughter, in packaging to keep foods fresher, and to make dry ice that is used in food transportation, CNN reported.

Scotland’s biggest pig farm was expected to stop slaughtering animals on Tuesday and at least two other U.K. pork processing plants were running low on CO2, The Guardian reported. Chicken producers have had to start using electrical water baths to stun the chickens, which slows down the process and gives the chicken a shorter shelf life in stores.

Besides food supply problems, home deliveries of groceries also have been affected, CNN reported.

The impact of the European supply problems is expected to last several weeks and comes at the worst possible time for beverage shortages: during hot weather and the World Cup, CNN noted.
