Bear Walking Upright Is Strange Sight in New Jersey, but Is It Real?

By    |   Friday, 08 Aug 2014 07:08 AM

Video footage of a bear walking upright just like a human in New Jersey's Jefferson Township has been viewed nearly a million times on YouTube, and has many residents puzzled.

Larry Ragonese, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, spoke for many when he said it's difficult to tell "if it’s a real bear, or if it’s Photoshopped, or a person in a costume." He told PIX 11 the bear appears to be walking a little too well, and that the whole thing looks "sketchy."

Tracy Leaver, executive director of the Woodlands Wildlife Refuge, however, said that it's not too uncommon for a bear with injuries to walk upright. She said the refuge has been aware of the bear for about a month and a half, and employees think it likely has an injury to both legs, most likely its paws and maybe elbows.

A black bear biologist with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, Kelcey Burguess, told NJ.com that the bear "most likely got hit by a car." Burguess told residents not to worry too much, however, as they've been monitoring the bear and it's expected to make a full recovery.

"He's exhibiting signs of healing and becoming more mobile. He's going to be just fine," he said. "We ask the residents to let us know how things are going. They live in the area. They can tell us more than anything."

Both Leaver and Burguess said that it was of paramount importance that people observe the bear from a safe distance, and not feed it. Leaver said that any bear that's fed will inevitably become a "problem bear" who is unafraid of humans and human settlements. Last year, residents started feeding a bear with similar injuries, and the bear's mother had to be shot after breaking into someone's house to rummage for food.

Burguess said the bear walking upright was fun but not extraordinary.

"What makes this out of the ordinary is he's hanging around a development," he said. "This one just happens to be a little more visual and folks are jumping all over it."
