B.B. King Poisoned, Daughters Claiming, So Coroner Steps In

Blues legend B.B. King was poisoned before his death by his business associates, two of the singer's daughters are claiming in an affidavit filed in Las Vegas, so now the coroner's office is stepping into the case.

The Clark County coroner's office said in a statement Monday that it has "taken jurisdiction" of King's body while charges made by family members are investigated, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"At this point, we don't have evidence that these allegations of foul play will be substantiated," John Fudenberg, the Clark County coroner, said in the statement. "However, we are taking them very seriously and will be conducting a thorough investigation."

CNN reported that Patty King and Karen Williams, both daughters of the legendary bluesman who died May 14, accused their father's business administrators of poisoning him in separate affidavits. King had 15 children from several different relationships and 11 are still living.

"I have personal knowledge of the following: from October 2014 until May 2015 I witnessed Louise Laverne Toney and Myron Johnson, who are medically unlicensed, administer medications, fluids and foreign object(s) to the person Riley B. King," stated Williams' affidavit.

"I also witnessed neglect of Mr. King's medical care by administrators of alleged medication to induce diabetic shock, since his blood sugar would not be monitored for up to 10 days at a time," the affidavit said.

Toney, King's business manager, told The Associated Press that the claims against her and Johnson, the singer's personal assistant, are the result of a power struggle in which the family is trying to wrestle control of the singer's assets from them.

"They've been making allegations all along," said Toney, who has power-of-attorney over King's affairs and has worked with him for nearly 40 years. "What's new?"

Fudenberg told the Review-Journal that an autopsy was performed on King and his body was returned to the mortuary.

"The investigation will not delay the funeral services from being held," said Fudenberg.

CNN reported that a public viewing for King will be held at the B.B. King Museum in Indianola, Mississippi on Friday with funeral services on Saturday.
