Flying Basic Economy? Beware the 'Forgetful' Fee

Flying Basic Economy? Beware the 'Forgetful' Fee

For those flying the new basic economy fares, don't forget the “forgetful” fee. It's part of the fine print on the ticket saying that most of the carry-on luggage you arrive at the gate with was not included in the lower-cost airfare.

In an effort to compete for the “lowest airfare” promise, some major airlines are rolling out Basic Economy fares. Although at face value they are less expensive than regular economy fares, the trip could work out more costly should a traveler forget this important “gate handling charge” policy.

Currently, United and American are the only two major airlines that don’t include a carry-on in the Basic Economy option fare. TravelPulse reminded that the fare also excludes regular luggage, so travelers need to pay extra for any checked-in luggage going in the hold.

Although most travelers are aware of the added cost of checked luggage, most seem to overlook the seemingly hidden “forgetful” fee attached to carry-on luggage.

United and American airlines’ rules stipulate that only a purse or small backpack may be taken onboard a flight, at no added cost. The Wall Street Journal said the extra fee was created to discourage travelers from bringing along carry-on luggage that won’t fit under their feet.

Customers are now being caught off guard and out of pocket when approaching the check-in gate with any carry-on luggage that needs to be placed in the overhead compartments.

There is not only a $25 gate-checking charge, but an additional $25 “gate handling charge” because the gate agent has to check the bag while customers are boarding. These additional charges obviously eat into any savings from the purchase of a basic economy fare.

To avoid these fees should you purchase a Basic Economy ticket, Fortune.com recommended you check-in and pay for your hand luggage when you arrive at the airport, or be prepared to pay once you get to the gate.
