Former major league baseball star pitcher Esteban Loaiza earned nearly $44 million during his career but managed to burn through it all long after his money-making days. Now he is broke and in prison, serving a three-year sentence for felony cocaine possession with intent to distribute.

The two-time All-Star had it all -- money, glory and fame. So his fall from grace came as a shock to fans. Driving his problems was a lavish lifestyle and a kind heart. Loaiza was eager to please his family and purchased homes and automobiles for his parents, brother and sister as well as a cousin, according to Bleacher Report.

He also was often approached by extended family members looking for spoils.

"His family kept drawing and drawing and drawing from him," one person close with the Loaizas said.

"OK, if your brother needs a car, fine. But it doesn't have to be a luxury vehicle. Family can be a source of anxiety often overlooked by those outside a player's inner circle, and it is especially endemic to athletes in all sports who have experienced poverty growing up."

Childhood pal Jose Silva said it was something most people did not understand.

"You have all of those millions, and now Uncle Sam takes this part, then there's this and that, and then you want to help your parents out, your family. I tell guys, 'You know what, hopefully your family is awesome, but [keep it] to your immediate family,'" he said. "You can't support everyone, dude. If you had a rich uncle, would he take care of you?"

Loaiza's all-time low came in February 2018, when he was busted with 44 pounds of cocaine worth $500,000, Fox News reported. Cops who had been watching him in Southern California near the Mexican border, acquired a search warrant for his house after pulling him over and having sniffer dogs smell for drugs in his Mercedes SUV.

Upon further investigation of his property, which he was renting, they discovered 20 packages of cocaine that had been stashed into the compartment of a vehicle parked inside the garage.

Loaiza's attorney said in paperwork filed with the court, that his client had "made a huge error in judgment when he agreed to commit this crime."
