Up and coming French singer Barbara Weldens died onstage Wednesday night while performing, reportedly from electrocution or cardiac arrest.
Weldens, 35, was performing in a church as part of a local festival in the village of Gourdon when she collapsed around midnight and died, the BBC reported. Weldens was performing barefoot when she collapsed, and there were reportedly storms in the area at the time.
Police are investigating her death, including whether any of her equipment failed. An autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death.
Weldens was gaining popularity as a singer in France, having released an album translated as “Man with a Capital M” in February and won the top prize in the Jacques Brel Festival’s Young Talents 2016 contest.
The singer had a series of concerts in France and Belgium scheduled in the coming months.
Weldena grew up in the circus before becoming a vocal performer. According to the BBC, in an interview with a French newspaper last year, she said, “I’ve always written poems, even when I was little. Then I took piano lessons as a teen. All I wanted to do was compose.”
Twitter fans were saddened at the news and commented that a number of performers had died on stage.
