At least six people were shot and killed Thursday by two men outside of a bar in Cancun, Mexico. The violence was away from the main tourist strip, but will undoubtedly cast a pall over the vacation destination.

Reportedly armed with automatic rifles and a handgun, the men killed six men and wounded five others, the office of the state's attorney general confirmed to Reuters.

The Associated Press and Britain's Telegraph reported seven dead instead of six.

The victims were reportedly members of a Mexican taxi drivers union.

This incident comes one month after masked gunmen stormed a house in the Mexican resort city Acapulco, which 12 Spanish tourists were renting. The assailants tied up six men and then raped the six women, escaping before authorities arrived. The attack appeared to be anti-foreigner, considering the only woman who wasn't harmed during the gang rape was a Mexican woman, officials said.

In the case of the Cancun shooting, officials said the taxi union members were targets, but it is unclear what the motivation was.

Mexican soldiers have been posted at the hospital where the victims are recovering, in the event of any attempted attacks.

Since 2007, more than 70,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico, Reuters reported.

Despite this, Mexican tourist destinations such as Cancun and Acapulco have largely escaped the violence and about 22.7 million foreign tourists vacationed in the nation in 2011, a five percent increase from the year prior, according to the Bank of Mexico.

It is the second most visited country in the Americas, behind the United States, according to the World Tourism Organization.
