A Baltimore bus crash killed six people Tuesday morning when a school bus and Maryland Transit Administration bus collided.

No children were on the school bus at the time of the accident, which happened at about 6:30 a.m. in southwest Baltimore on Frederick Avenue at Monastery Avenue, WBAL-TV reported.

The cause of the crash is not immediately clear, and details were scare early Tuesday.

"It is a horrific scene," Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith told WBAL-TV.

"Smith said the school bus was traveling east on Frederick Avenue when it struck a Ford Mustang, hit a pillar at a cemetery, continued east onto oncoming traffic, and struck the MTA bus," the local station reported.

The fatalities included the school bus driver and five people on the transit but. Ten others were transported to a local hospital with injuries ranging from minor to critical, The Baltimore Sun reported.

"It literally looks like a bomb exploded in the bus, and it’s catastrophic damage," Smith told the newspaper.

Thirteen people were thought to have been on the transit bus at the time of the crash, while the school bus driver and an aide, who was injured, were the only ones in that vehicle.

Matt Wagster, superintendent of nearby Loudon Park Cemetery, told The Sun that the crash "sounded like a train wreck. It was loud and it shook the ground."

The Baltimore Police Department posted updates on the incident to Twitter.

Gov. Larry Hogan issued a statement on the crash:

"The first lady and I are deeply saddened to hear of the horrific crash this morning in Southwest Baltimore involving a school bus and an MTA commuter bus. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims and their families in the wake of this tragedy. We will continue to pray for those who were injured, as well as the first responders who worked swiftly and continue to care for the injured."

"Our administration gives our full support to the Baltimore City Police Department as they investigate, and we are prepared to offer any state assistance necessary," the statement continued.
