The case of Bakari Henderson, who was attacked and killed nearly a week ago on the Greek island of Zakynthos, saw its first arrests with nine men being detained and charged with intentional homicide.

A police official told The New York Times that five of those men were ordered jailed ahead of their trials while the other four will face hearings later this week.

A video showed that Henderson, 22, was brutally attacked by several men in the early morning hours Friday at the island party resort Laganas, the Times noted. Police said they believe, based on their investigation, that the incident was sparked at about 3 a.m. when an argument started about a female bartender.

The suspects followed Henderson and his friends as they left the establishment and then attacked Henderson in the middle of the street, the Times reported. Those arrested include a British citizen of Serbian origin, 32, who worked as a bouncer at the bar where the brawl broke out; a 34-year-old Greek bartender, 34; and seven Serbian men.

"They kicked and punched him to his body and his head," Greek police spokesman Theodore Chronopoulos told The Washington Post. "His death came from hits in his head."

Chronopoulous told the Post that suspects continuously beat Henderson, a recent graduate from the University of Arizona, for about 30 seconds before he died.

Henderson suffered severe head injuries in the incident, the coroner told ABC News. All the strikes to Henderson were to the head, and it appears and there were no defensive wounds on Henderson's body, the coroner added.

"As you can imagine, our family is devastated by the recent loss of our beloved son Bakari Jaward Henderson," Henderson's family said in a statement to KVUE-TV in Austin, Texas, his hometown.

"… Bakari was in Greece working on a photo shoot to launch his new clothing line when the unbelievable tragedy occurred. Bakari loved spending time with family and friends, traveling, and meeting new people. He was a big thinker and enjoyed coming up with new business ventures. Bakari was an inspiration to all he met. He loved life and lived it to the fullest," the statement continued.
