A baby was born to a surrogate mother four years after his parents' death in China, The Guardian reported.

The couple had decided to try in vitro fertilization after two years of marriage but, five days before one of the fertilized embryos were scheduled to be transplanted, they died in a car accident in March 2013.

Since then the couple's parents have been fighting courts for the rights to the four remaining frozen embryos, which they finally won in January 2017, and in December the baby boy was born to a surrogate from Laos.

It has been a long, winding battle for the families involved, who had to work through a legal minefield before the surrogacy could take place, BBC noted.

After the fatal accident, the embryos were stored at a Nanjing hospital because there was no precedent as to whether the parents of the deceased could inherit the fertilized eggs.

And while they eventually won over the rights to the embryos, they could not take them until securing proof that another hospital would be able to store them.

Once this challenge was met, the families had to set about finding a surrogate and, with this service illegal in China, they had to set their sights abroad.

Eventually they found a surrogate in Laos but, according to Time magazine, the eggs had to be transported across the border by car because no airline was willing to take the embryos, which were encased in a thermos of liquid-nitrogen.

Then there was the issue of citizenship and the surrogate had to travel to China on a tourist visa to give birth to the baby to ensure Chinese citizenship.

Once the baby, who was named Tiantian, was born there were more complications.

According to The Guardian, the new grandparents had to undergo DNA testing to prove their relationship with the baby to maintain custody.

"Tiantian's eyes look like my daughter's but overall, he looks more like his father," said one grandmother, Hu Xinxian, per The Guardian.
