An Australian telescope has joined the search for alien life Breakthrough Listen announced Monday, saying that they’ve began using the Parkes radio telescope in Australia as part of the $100 million effort to look for possible signals of alien civilizations.

The Breakthrough Listen project is the “largest ever scientific research program aimed at finding evidence of civilizations beyond Earth,” Science World Report noted.

“The addition of Parkes is an important milestone,” billionaire entrepreneur Yuri Milner, founder of the Breakthrough Initiatives, said in a statement. “These major instruments are the ears of planet Earth, and now they are listening for signs of other civilizations.”

On Tuesday, scientists said the Parkes telescope had its official “first light” just 14 days after performing test observations, IFL Science noted.

The telescope's chosen target is Proxima B, an “Earth-sized planet orbiting in the habitable zone of its star,” which is located 4.2 light-years from us, IFL Science noted.

“…Once we knew there was a planet right next door, we had to ask the question, and it was a fitting first observation for Parkes,” said Dr. Andrew Siemion, Director of Berkeley SETI Research Center and the leader of the Breakthrough Listen science program.

“To find a civilization just 4.2 light years away would change everything.”

The Australian telescope has become the third scope to be used in the project with the first two being West Virginia’s Green Bank Telescope and California’s Automated Planet Finder at Lick Observatory, Science World Report noted.

The Breakthrough Listen project was announced in the summer of 2015.
