Australian Beach Fireworks Display Explodes, Thousands Flee

An Australian beach fireworks display exploded on New Year's Eve, leaving thousands fearing for their safety, the Newcastle Herald reported.

Safe Work New South Wales is investigating how the fireworks display at Terrigal ended up exploding five minutes into the event, stunning viewers, the news site reported.

The Herald wrote that an ambulance took two men operating the fireworks from a barge about 165 yards from shore in front of Terrigal Surf Club to a hospital for treatment to minor injuries. The men dove into the water after the explosion and emergency personnel in watercraft rescued them, per the news site.

The publication said fireworks watchers scattered and police and first responders rushed into the beach resort area when the explosion happened about 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

"The fireworks were going off as you'd expect and then suddenly there was a hell of an explosion," Terrigal resident Kevin Andrews said, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. "Next thing the barge was on fire."

One viewer posted video of the event on Instagram.

Spectator Cassandra Bonner, who watched the fireworks from her apartment on Terrigal Beach, told 9 News that the explosion caught many by surprise.

"There were people everywhere on the beach and about five minutes into the fireworks presentation the fireworks all went off which didn’t look normal," Bonner told 9 News. "Then we saw a man on the boat with a torch waving and then the police had to go over in their boat and save the man and then all of a sudden the boat was on fire.

"There were so many people on the beach you couldn't even see the sand. As soon as the boat caught alight the fireworks were still going off, but unexpectedly, and they were shooting off almost towards the beach. So everyone started bolting off the beach on to the road. People were panicking," Bonner continued.
