A database containing the names and personal information of staff members at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps has been published online by Poland.

The Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), a state-run organization, published the database based on data archived in Poland, Germany, Austria, the U.S., and Russia.

The staff database includes 9,686 names, the IPN said, according to The Guardian, many of which were compiled by the historian Aleksander Lasik over 30 years in cooperation with the institute and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial.

Lasik’s full database has more than 25,000 names of guards from different camps, and he plans to publish more names in the future, he told The Associated Press.

The most complete list of Nazi SS commanders and guards was made public in hopes that some of them might still be prosecuted for their crimes.

“The world justice system has failed and I’m doing what a historian should do: expose the responsible individuals as war criminals,” Lasik told the AP.

It has been more than 70 years since the camps were in operation, but Lasik believes up to 200 former guards might still be alive today.

The database lists the date and place of birth, nationality, education, military service, and party affiliation of most of the names listed. Some photos also are included.

About 12 percent of Auschwitz guards have been tried in Polish courts and others. For guards that were tried, judicial documents are also included in the database, the AP said.

An estimated 1.1 million people were killed by the Nazis in Auschwitz-Birkenau between 1940 and 1945.
