Ausar Walcott, Cleveland Browns Rookie, Cut After Murder Attempt

Aaron Hernandez isn’t the only NFL player in trouble with the law. The Cleveland Browns cut Ausar Walcott Wednesday after the rookie linebacker was charged with attempted murder for a fight over the weekend.

Walcott, 23, turned himself into Passaic, N.J., police Tuesday to face first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree endangering a victim charges, the New York Daily News reported.

The former Hackensack High School football star is accused of punching Derrick Jones, 24, in the head outside The Palace Gentlemen's Club Sunday night. Jones remains in critical condition at Harlem Hospital Center in New York as of Wednesday, according to police.

The Browns, who signed Walcott last month as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Virginia, released him Wednesday.

"We are aware of the situation," the team said in a statement. "This is a pending legal matter and we will not comment."

Walcott is being held at Passaic County Jail on $500,000 bail.

Most of the spotlight this week, however, was on former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who was dropped from the team Wednesday — the same day he was also charged with one count of murder and five weapons violations.

Hernandez, 23, is accused of shooting and killing semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, 27, whose body was found in an industrial park near Hernandez's house June 17.

"We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing," the Patriots said in a statement. "We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

Hernandez is the 29th NFL player, including Walcott, to be arrested since Feb. 3, according to a database maintained by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
