Arsh Shah Dilbagi, 16, Invents $100 Breath-to-Speech Device

Arsh Shah Dilbagi is only 16, but his breath-to-speech device has caught the attention of Google, netting him the only entry from Asia at the Google Science Fair 2014.

According to IBN Live, the prototype, named "Talk," was developed and designed over the course of 10 months. It translates Morse-code exhalations from the nose or mouth into words, and those words are spoken by a digital voice contained in the unit's handheld speaker box. The unit itself was designed with a 3-D printer, is roughly the size of a smartphone, and weighs just as much.

"Talk uses breath as the medium of interaction between the user and device, which also makes it unique as it has been never done before," Dilbagi says in a video describing his invention.

There have been other breath-to-speech devices marketed over the years, however Dilbagi built his from scratch, and the design could significantly lower the price of such devices to less than $100.

The device would help roughly one hundred million people — 1.4 percent of the world's population — who have developmental disabilities communicate quickly and effectively.

According to the International Business Times, Dilbagi is a 12th grade student at the DAV Public School in Panipat, Haryana, and draws inspiration from the late Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs.

Dilbagi is a rising star in the Indian science community, and was honored in 2012 by the then President of India, Pratibha Patil, for building an Autonomous UGV (unmanned ground vehicle).
