Armored Truck Crashes on Rhode Island Highway, Spilling Bags of Money

An armored truck crashed on a Rhode Island highway Saturday, spilling bags of money, injuring two passengers, and tying up traffic on a busy East Coast thoroughfare for more than an hour.

The Garda truck was traveling southbound on Route 10 when the driver lost control and ran off the road, the Boston Globe reported. State police told the newspaper that the driver and a passenger were taken to Rhode Island Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

Bags of money spilled out of the armored truck after it rolled onto its side. Many passing drivers reportedly swarmed to the scene though police said it's not clear whether anyone took any bills. It was also not reported how much money was aboard the truck.

"There were bags of it all over the place" when emergency crews arrived, deputy fire chief Paul L. Valletta Jr., told the Providence Journal. "There were quite a few people here."

Valletta said that a second Garda armored truck was called in to transfer the money while state police watched.

One of the injured occupants was reportedly sitting in the back of truck with the money, Valletta told the Journal.

"The back doors were open before we got here," he said. "We weren't going to go through the armored car [wall], so we had to improvise" to get to the driver "very gingerly." "We popped a [side] door and cut the seats out to give us some room."

It was the second accident for a Garda armored truck in recent weeks. On Aug. 21, NJ.com reported that a GardaWorld truck in Morris Township, New Jersey, overturned, injuring a driver after he lost control of the vehicle.

Morris Township fire chief Scott Lovenberg told NJ.com that about 30 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in the accident.

GardaWorld Security Corp. is an international corporation based in Canada that provides security at airports, embassies, and large events, the Providence Journal reported, noting that the company has about 3,500 armored trucks in its fleet.
