Giorgio Armani school uniforms introduced by a Tokyo primary school are causing an uproar among parents and politicians, who feel that the $729 price tag for each outfit is a bit steep.

The principal of Taimei Elementary School issued a letter to parents in November explaining that the school would be adopting a new uniform that was more in line with its status as a "landmark" in the high-end neighborhood, Ginza, BBC reported.

W Magazine noted that the designer dress code would cost three times more than the school's former uniform and students would have to pay more if they wanted to add other items by Armani.

"I was surprised and wondered why such luxury uniforms have been picked for a public elementary school," an unnamed mother said, according to BBC.

"It's like saying no to poor people and welcoming only those who take pride in Armani," Naoki Ogi, a popular education commentator, said in a blog, according to The Associated Press.

The topic came up in parliament on Thursday.

"School uniforms are already more expensive than the business suits we wear," said Manabu Terata, an opposition lawmaker, according to the AP. "But these uniforms at Taimei Elementary School are especially questionable."

"Clearly it's expensive," noted the finance minister, Taro Aso, according to The Telegraph.

"It would be severe if a student cannot afford to pay it."

Education minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said that the topic should have first been discussed with parents before the school made a final decision, according to NHK.

Meanwhile the school's principal said he accepted the criticism and would provide a detailed explanation to parents, BBC said.
