Arlene Martel, the actress who played Spock’s fiancee on “Star Trek” in 1966, died Tuesday from complications of a heart attack.
Martel, who played small parts in numerous TV shows including “Hogan’s Heroes,” “Perry Mason,” and “I Dream of Jeannie,” was best-known for her role as T’Pring, the Vulcan who was engaged to Spock as a child in an episode called “Amok Time.”

“The primary lesson for me on Amok Time was a lesson in K.I.S.S. ("Keep It Simple, Stupid"),” Martel wrote on her website. “Our director Joe Pevney, contrary to what most directors usually request of the actor, said ‘give me less, give me less.’ Previous to that, most of the women I played had been highly charged with emotion. Playing a character as emotionally controlled as ‘T'Pring’ was certainly a first for me. Controlling my energy was a very wonderful discipline, and playing a person who was ruled by logic was also a new experience.”
Leonard Nimoy bid his farewell to Martel online:
Lee Raskin, author of “James Dean At Speed,” commented on an article by The Mary Sue about Martel’s death that the young actress, at the time known as Arline Sax, was a girlfriend of Dean before he became a movie star. “Besides being a talented actress in nearly 100 TV episodes, Arlene co-starred in ‘Angels From Hell’…now a motorcycle cult movie filmed in 1968,” he wrote.
Martel’s friend, Michael Mapel, at the actress’ request, created a Vimeo video of Martel’s work that highlighted the numerous roles she held over five decades in the business.
