Arizona Wildfire Evacuations Continue as Blaze Slowly Contained

By    |   Monday, 30 June 2014 07:08 AM

Arizona's wildfire evacuations have been kept in place while fire crews continued successful burnout campaigns through the weekend, slowing the fire's growth to just one square mile on Sunday.

Spokesman Bill Morse of the Southwest Area Incident Management Team told The Associated Press on Sunday evening that the San Juan Fire had grown from 8 to 9 square miles, but that all of the growth occurred within perimeter lines built by the fire crews.

Morse said the fire was "very secure" and that the last edge to be reined in will be the western one, which has been a "problem child."

680 firefighters and other personnel are actively fighting the human-caused blaze, along with two dozen engines, five helicopters, bulldozers, and water tenders.

Severe to extreme drought has contributed to many fires across both Arizona and New Mexico, and the region is hoping to contain them until the rainy season arrives.

Nearly 100 structures are threatened by the current blaze, including three dozen homes in the Red Cabin Ranch, Carlock Ranch, and Whiting homestead areas — all of which have been evactuated.

In addition to laying out a strategic spread of fire retardants, Morse said that fuel was also being laid down so that the fire would burn out quickly in some areas.

"This is literally fighting fire with fire," he said.

He told local citizens that the strategic burns could produce thicker, blacker smoke for a short time, but said this is a good sign.
