Singer Ariana Grande contributed towards Florida's voter registration site experiencing a massive surge of traffic after she encouraged fans to register to vote. Taking to social media, the pop star stressed to her Florida fans how important it was to register to vote on Monday, which was initially the final day they could register, because "Florida has the potential of swaying the election."
Shortly after she shared her post to Instagram and Twitter, the voter registration site saw a spike in traffic that may have crashed the site, reported the Orlando Sentinel. The state was forced to extend the registration deadline by nearly 24 hours after the website left users with glitches and error messages on Monday night. The increased activity even led the state to work with law enforcement to investigate the possibility of a cyber-attack
Commenting on the issue, the state’s chief information officer, James Grant, attributed misconfigured servers to the problems with the state's voter registration website. He explained that the servers had been configured in a way that allowed them to handle only a fraction of what they are capable of, but the website had "a whole lot more horsepower" once the servers were reconfigured.
As the website was faltering on Monday, Grande pleaded with officials to extend the registration deadline.
"yikes #VoterSuppression @GovRonDeSantis please extend registrations," she tweeted.
She continued to urge fans to register to vote in their respective states on Wednesday.
"turning in these mixes and reminding u again to register to vote if u haven’t already / to vote early," she wrote in a follow-up tweet.
