Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea is on the rise and spreading to more countries, according to the World Health Organization.

The WHO said that in most countries, extended-spectrum cephalosporins are now the only effective treatment for the disease spread by oral, anal, or vaginal sex, and can be passed on to a baby during vaginal childbirth, USA Today reported.

Three strains of the disease resistant to all known antibiotics were found in Japan, France, and Spain, CNN reported. Gonorrhea was one of 11 types of bacteria considered the greatest health risks for people because of the resistance.

Gonorrhea has been reported in 77 countries, affecting 78 million people each year. If left untreated, the disease can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Symptoms are pain during urination and discharge, although many cases don’t have any physical symptoms, so someone could be infected without realizing it, USA Today reported.

“The bacteria that cause gonorrhea are particularly smart. Every time we use a new class of antibiotics to treat the infection, the bacteria evolve to resist them,” medical officer of human reproduction at WHO Teodora Wi said in a statement, USA Today reported.

Scientists and doctors readily acknowledge that new treatments are urgently needed to treat gonorrhea strains that have become resistant to existing antibiotcs.

“To control gonorrhea, we need new tools and systems for better prevention, treatment, earlier diagnosis, and more complete tracking and reporting of new infections, antibiotic use, resistance, and treatment failures,” WHO director of Antimicrobial Resistance Marc Sprenger said, USA Today reported.

Twitter followers offered good advice to beat the epidemic.
