An anti-Semitic valentine handed out to students on the campus of Central Michigan University has drawn an apology from the College Republicans, while the group said it did not sanction the card or agree with its contents.

The valentine depicted Adolf Hitler with the caption, “my love 4 u burns like 6,000 jews,” the student newspaper Central Michigan Life reported. It was in a bag that was given to two students in Anspach Hall on Wednesday by a member of the College Republicans, the newspaper reported.

College Republicans president Mackenzie Flynn said that the card was distributed during a Valentine’s party the group had, during which members decorated bags and others put valentines inside. One member of the group is said to have printed a page of Valentine’s Day memes to put in others’ bags, and the page contained the offensive meme.

“While still not appropriate, I want to clear up that they did not create it themselves,” Flynn said to the newspaper. It was also not created by or endorsed by the College Republicans.

The group posted on Facebook that it “in no way condone[s] this type of rhetoric or anti-Semitism,” adding, “We apologize for any offense, and want students to know that we do not tolerate this sort of behavior.”

One of the students given the bag showed the card to her friend who posted an image of the card on social media. University President George Ross denounced the card, saying that the language was “unacceptable and not consistent with our values and standards,” The Washington Post reported. Students held a rally to protest hate speech on campus on Thursday.
