Anthony Perez, 11, is credited with saving his friend who broke through the ice on a frozen pond in New York City, but then died in the frigid water before police and firefighters could find him.

Police said Perez was at Strack Pond in Forest Park in the borough of Queens on Tuesday with 12-year-old Juan Umpierrez who fell into the water when some ice broke beneath him, the New York Daily News reported.

Perez was standing on the bank and jumped into the pond to pull his friend to safety.

"He was on land, he only went out to the ice after the other kid fell through," a law enforcement source told the New York Post. "(Perez) was able to push him (Umpierrez) out to safety, but he fell through ice and he couldn't get out.”

Umpierrez ran to an apartment to get help, but Perez was under water for about a half-hour, a fire department source said.

FDNY deputy chief George Healy told the Daily News that three police officers and three fighters cracked the ice on the pond looking for Perez.

"They were in about chest deep water, wading through the water,” Healy said. "They had to physically with their hands break through the ice and chop the ice so they could get to the area they knew that the child would most likely be in, the opening in the ice."

Perez was found under a break in the ice not breathing and was taken to Jamaica Medical Center, the Daily News said. He was pronounced dead two hours later.

Neighbors praised Perez for his heroism, the Post said.

"I'm going to call him a hero: He's a hero," said Carmen Rivera, 51, who lives near the Perez family, per the Post. "He's friendly with a lot of people, not shy — he loves to help. He's a nice little kid."

Healy urged during a news conference that parents warn their kids against playing on bodies of frozen water during the winter, per the Post.

"We implore you: Tell your children, the ice is not safe," Healy said. "It's not gonna support your weight. And there can be tragic consequences."
