Ann Romney Blames Mitt's Loss on Media, His Campaign Team

By    |   Monday, 04 Mar 2013 08:40 AM

Ann Romney blames the media and her husband's campaign team for Mitt Romney ultimately losing the presidential election, she told Fox News' Chris Wallace Sunday in her first post-election interview.

"I'm happy to blame the media," Romney said. "The thing that was frustrating to me is that people didn’t really get to know Mitt for who he was. People weren't allowed to see him for who he really was."

The one-time potential first lady confirmed reports that she and her son Tagg even took campaign officials aside in October and urged them to "let Mitt be Mitt" in an effort to humanize the former governor of Massachusetts.

"Well, of course — it was part–true," she said. "But it was not just the campaign's fault — I believe it was the media's fault as well. He was not being given a fair shake."

Critics were quick to jump on Romney's remarks.

"There's a mound of contradiction in Ann Romney's critique," wrote Erik Wemple on his Washington Post blog Sunday. "On one hand, Ann Romney confirms her frustration that the campaign kept too tight a lid on the candidate. On the other hand, she complains that he wasn't portrayed more completely in the media. Problem: The campaign controlled the media's access to the candidate, so blaming them both at the same time is a touch precious. Or perhaps it’s a luxury you're afforded in the rearview mirror."

Her complaints are null and void if you look at the big New York Times story that ran in October, Wemple argued. The piece, some said, humanized Mitt Romney and provided Americans with a glimpse into his personality and everyday real life.

Twitter users also jumped on the bandwagon criticizing Romney's comments.

Mitt Romney joined his wife for the Fox sit-down Sunday, and recounted his feelings when he heard he had lost the election.

"My heart said we were going to win," he said. "It's hard, it's emotional. I mean there was such passion in the people who were helping us, I just felt, you know, we've really let them down."
