Former Maine Gov. Angus King is refusing to say which party he would caucus with if elected to retiring GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe’s seat this fall.
Despite King’s open endorsement of Barack Obama for re-election, four lobbyists who attended the meet-and-greets reported to
Politico that King is making it clear he won't necessarily side with the Democrats.
King, who is favorite to win the Senate seat, even told potential donors: “If you’re a solid partisan and you need to know what caucus I’m going to be with, don’t give to me now because I may not be with you,” reported Politico.
One lobbyist said: “No matter which side he’s on,” King will either be “a pro-business, liberal Republican or a conservative Democrat.”
National Democrats have not fully rallied behind the party’s nominee, state legislator Cynthia Dill, suggesting that many members are betting on King ultimately joining their caucus.
