Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is "dangerous for Florida," Andrew Pollack, whose daughter, Meadow, was killed in the Parkland school shooting says in a robocall for Ron DeSantis' campaign.
Pollack became politically active after the Feb. 14 shooting left 17 people dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Florida Politics noted. He has supported Gov. Rick Scott, appearing in an ad released by Scott earlier this month.
The robocall is an attempt to discredit Gillum's relationship with police, Florida Politics said. In the 44-second call, Pollack says he is supporting DeSantis "to ensure that no parent loses their child in a school shooting again."
He says Gillum will "defund the police, and keep them out of our schools."
At issue is a pledge signed by Gillum to not accept money from the National Rifle Association or private prison corporations, Florida Politics noted, adding that it also includes a promise to support Dream Defenders' "Freedom Papers," which includes more radical promises.
Gillum and DeSantis have clashed over a new Florida law put in place after the shooting that raised the minimum age to buy rifles and shotguns, extended waiting periods to include long guns, banned bump stocks and included school security provisions, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
DeSantis previously said he would have vetoed the law and said he thinks the provision raising the legal age to by firearms will be struck down as unconstitutional, the newspaper said. He said more needs to be done on school security.
Gillum has spoken positively about the law and claimed that DeSantis' opposition is "because he is wholly owned by the NRA," according to the Sun-Sentinal.
