Ana Charle, Killed Shelter Worker, Attacked by Former Resident: Police

By    |   Wednesday, 29 Apr 2015 07:49 PM

Ana Charle, the director of a Bronx homeless shelter, was killed Monday night, allegedly by a former resident.

The suspect, West Spruill, allegedly abducted Charle, forced her to undress in her car and shot her while she ran naked trying to escape, The New York Times reported.

“This is as bad a homicide as I’ve seen,” an unnamed police official told the newspaper.

Spruill, 39, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Charle, 36, had bullet wounds to her temple, cheek, and chest.

Wanda L. Rijo, the shelter’s clinical director, described Charle as a caring person with two young daughters ages 9 and 11.

“She was a wonderful person,” Rijo told the Times. “An excellent mother, a hard worker. She was a great leader. She was the director of the program and very caring about the population that we work with.”

The incident occurred when Charle was walking to her car at the Project Renewal Shelter at about 6 p.m., WPIX-TV reported.

Spruill has six prior arrests, including one for attempted murder, and was imprisoned in Michigan for assault with a deadly weapon, the station reported.

Police believe the crime was a targeted attack and that Spruill was waiting for Charle at her car, the New York Daily News reported. An autopsy is expected to determine whether she was raped.

“He is a really, really bad guy,” an unnamed police official told the newspaper.

He lived at the shelter from last June to January.

Police found plastic wrist-ties and Charle’s license plate number written down on a slip of paper in Spruill’s bag, The New York Times said.
