An American tourist was brutally killed while vacationing in Grenada on Sunday morning when she and her husband were allegedly attacked by a man wielding a large blade.

According to CNN, Jessica Colker of Georgia, 39, died from an "extensive skull fracture and asphyxia," according to autopsy results released by the Royal Grenada Police Force on Tuesday. Her husband reportedly survived.

Colker's body was reportedly found on La Sagresse beach, a populated and well-known area associated with the La Sagesse resort, Yahoo News reported.

"The police believe that the man who committed the murder is Dave Martin Benjamin, an ex-convict who was recently released from prison. MTV News Grenada reports that Benjamin walked into the St. David police station and turned himself in," wrote Yahoo.

Sue Hardy, 63, a British women's magazine journalist, was on the beach when the commotion started, around 11:30 a.m. local time.

"There was a sudden commotion near the little pen-fronted restaurant, which faces out on to the beach," she said, according to the Daily Mail.

"Some guys were shouting and people were running. At first we didn't know what was happening. But gradually rumors started spreading among the tourists," said Hardy.

"After walking for half a mile round the bay, where you are still in sight from the hotel and restaurant and the main area where tourists sit out in the sun, you can go up a path which leads through a sort of mangrove swamp, with steps so you don't walk into the mud. After about 100 yards through this somewhat dark swampy area, you come out on to another beach which is totally deserted," she continued.

Colker lived in Atlanta, and worked at a children's hospital.

"Jessica was a valued member of our children's team," Children's Healthcare of Atlanta said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by this horrific news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this very difficult time."
