The American Music Awards saw Ariana Grande walk away with the artist of the year award, but it was Selena Gomez's "confession" after her win for favorite female rock/pop artist that struck a chord with many in the audience.

Gomez was making her first public appearance since canceling her tour earlier this year because of anxiety and depression stemming from Lupus, noted the BBC News.

"I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down," Gomez said in her acceptance speech. "But I kept it too much together to where I let myself down. I had to stop, because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside."

"… I'm not trying to get validation, nor do I need it any more. All I can say is I'm so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every day with people that I love."

USA Today noted that Green Day got political during its performance of "Bang Bang," adding the chants, "No Trump/No KKK." The chant was in reference to president-elect Donald Trump's endorsement by the Ku Klux Klan's official newspaper.

The pairing of Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharaoh as hosts was panned by USA Today writer Patrick Ryan.

"Separately, we love Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharaoh," he said. "But the model and 'Saturday Night Live' comedian had zero chemistry as co-hosts and their forced jokes about Trump, repeated references to the U Name It meme and attempt at the Mannequin Challenge were painful to watch. And don't even get us started on Hadid's cringe-worthy Melania Trump impression."

Rapper Drake walked away with four awards and singer Justin Bieber grabbed three.
