ABC sitcom "American Housewife" angered some residents of Norwalk, Connecticut, with insulting jokes about the city, and the show has agreed to cut it out after receiving complaints.

“As a comedy, ‘American Housewife’ isn’t intended to offend anyone. We’ve heard the concerns of the people of Norwalk and have made the decision to omit any mentions of the city from future episodes,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement, The Wrap reported.

Residents from the town had complained to ABC about the jokes, which portrayed the town as backward and its people as ignorant, according to the Hartford Courant.

ABC describes “American Housewife” as being about a flawed family living in the wealthy Connecticut town of Westport, where they don’t really fit in with all the “perfect” families around them.

Connecticut Senate Majority Leader and Norwalk resident Bob Duff told the Courant the citizens of Norwalk were growing tired of the constant put-downs on the show, even if they were intended to be funny and not serious.

“It hit a nerve with the people of Norwalk when they went after our kids,” Duff said. “It’s a constant attack on Norwalk. Their portrayal of our city is poor, it’s insensitive and it reflects our children, especially, in a poor light.”

Duff pointed out that the show even mocked the diversity of Norwalk, which he feels is “a strength, not a weakness.”

One recent "American Housewife" storyline centered around whether the mother in the show would let her teenage daughter be part of a group Halloween costume: pregnant prom girls from Norwalk.

“This is a form of bullying,” Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling told The Hour. “Making fun of Norwalk students, making fun of any student is inappropriate and it’s painting Norwalk with a broad stroke ugly brush, and nothing could be further from the truth.”

Andy Ross, another Norwalk resident, started a petition asking producers to stop the insults and gathered 547 signatures.

“I feel great about the [ABC] decision,” Ross told the Norwalk Daily Voice. “It was the wrong thing to do to begin with but they did the right thing to correct it.”
