The third season premiere of "American Horror Story: Coven" thrilled viewers with creepy and terrifying images, and also gathered in the highest ratings of any "AHS" yet.

Tweeted Ryan Murphy, producer, director and screenwriter:

BuzzFeed summed up the first show in the eerie and disturbing FX series with an article titled, “16 Most WTF Moments From The ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ Premiere,” which included witch Madame LaLaurie (played by the unstoppably creepy Kathy Bates) using blood as her night mask and her attic stocked with mutilated slaves.

Of course, describing "American Horror Story" as creepy, eerie, and disturbing means the show has gone a long way toward meeting its mission.

Last night’s premiere certainly brought fans and reviewers to social media to express their glee:

Screenrant writer Kevin Yeoman took the first show of “Coven” as the launch of a season that already looks better than the previous two.

“Right off the bat, 'American Horror Story: Coven' suggests a marked improvement in terms of having a cohesive narrative and a more significant throughline tying together the different character arcs and various story elements that are laid out in the season premiere,” he wrote.

Intriguing to many on social media is that Bates’s LaLaurie character is based on a real person. Now that’s scary.
