An ambulance crew took a detour so a dying woman could say a final goodbye to a beach in Australia.

USA Today reported that members of the Queensland Ambulance Service were transporting the terminally ill woman to the palliative care unit of a local hospital on Australia’s east coast when she mentioned wanting to see the beach again.

The ambulance crew decided to grant the woman this final dying wish and took a small detour to the nearest beach, where they rolled her out on a gurney to overlook the ocean.

Paramedic Graeme Cooper, who got permission from his superiors for the side trip, said via USA Today that they “popped her up on the hill where she could see the pier and Fraser Island and right through to Point Burrum and she was ecstatic with it all."

Helen Donaldson, the officer in charge of Hervey Bay, said “tears were shed and the patient felt very happy.”

She said, “Sometimes it is not the drugs/training/skills – sometimes all you need is empathy to make a difference!”

Paramedic Danielle Kellan, who managed to capture the moment in a photo, recalled the day with clarity.

“I said to the patient: ‘What are you thinking?’” she told The Telegraph.

“And she said: ‘I’m at peace, everything is right’.”

The woman died a few days later.

The Queensland Ambulance Service shared the photo, which showed Cooper standing next to the woman, on its Facebook page.

The post moved others to share similar heart-warming stories about emergency service crews acknowledging their dying patient’s last wishes.

“Years ago a fellow crew member and I had a situation where the patient was taking her last ride home,” recalled one Facebook user. “She asked to see the beach one last time. After going the beach and opening the rear door, we asked her if would like an ice cream, to which she replied yes with a giggle of delight. A short time later the hardly licked ice cream fell to the floor. The patient had passed away.”

“Many years ago a very close friend was getting married and on the day of her wedding her mother collapsed as she had terminal cancer,” another Facebook user wrote. “The ambulance was called. Instead of the ambulance taking her to hospital they went to the church and wheeled her into the church on a stretcher. She watched her daughter get married, she died a few days later.”
