An Amber Alert has been issued for a young girl in Miami whom a witness said was stuffed inside the trunk of a car.

A witness told police he saw what appeared to be a girl of about 5 years old in the partially opened trunk of a grey Chevrolet Impala he was behind at the intersection of Bird Road and 57th Avenue. He told authorities that the motorist got out and slammed the trunk shut before driving away, according to CBS Miami.

The license plate number, 106LYT, came back to a rental car, and authorities identified the customers as Hernan Daza-Novellino and Anna Rita Di Frances Cantonio, the television station reported.

The girl was described as having long, straight, brown hair and was wearing pink clothes. Daza-Novellino was described as standing about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and having brown eyes and brown hair, according to the local NBC 6 South Florida station.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call Miami-Dade police at 305-471-8477 or call 911.

Amber Alerts are employed to find missing children and were initiated in 1996 after the abduction and murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Fort Worth, Texas. According to federal officials, three out of every four children abducted by strangers are killed within a few hours, and Amber Alerts are meant to notify the public about kidnappings as soon as they happen.

An Amber Alert played a critical role in the recent rescue of 16-year-old Hannah Anderson who was taken by a family friend accused of killing the girl’s mother and younger brother before abducting her. The Anderdon was found safe in Idaho; her suspected abductor, James DiMaggio, was shot dead.

The case was notable because it was the first time that California officials notified the public about an Amber alert via their cell phones.
