Amazon is working on a pair of smart glasses that will include the Alexa voice assistant and bone-conduction technology so the user can hear it without the use of earphones, the Financial Times reported.

The technology sounds something similar to Google Glass, the head-mounted wearable computer that was pulled from the market by Google in January 2015 after negative reviews and objection over privacy rights, Fox News reported then.

While Google Glass failed, users liked the audio technology, Financial Times noted.

Amazon, though, hired Google Glass founder Babak Parviz, who was director of the company's Google X research lab, in 2014, Forbes wrote.

The Amazon device, which could be available this year, will look like a regular pair of glasses and will likely not have a screen or camera, like its Google Glass predecessor, The Verge reported, citing the Financial Times article.

The glasses reportedly would be wirelessly tethered to the user's smartphone. That puts the device at a disadvantage against competitors like Google and Apple because it has no smartphone hardware where its voice technology is already installed, TechCrunch reported.

An Amazon representative declined to speak about the smart glasses device report, stating that it does not comment on rumors or speculation, TechCrunch reported.

Amazon is already selling Alexa On The Go headphones, which streams songs with Prime Music, iHeart Radio, Tune-In, while allowing users to listen to audible books or news and weather information.

RBC Capital Markets said in a note published in March that Alexa could bring Amazon $10 billion in revenue by 2020.

RBC based its estimate on Amazon selling 60 million Alexa devices, which would bring in $5 billion, along with the increased spending on the e-commerce giant's products through the device, which would rake in another $5 billion, CNBC reported.

The global investment bank stated that the Alexa devices could increase spending from five to 15 percent, or $40 per customer, according to CNBC.
