Amanda Knox got engaged last week to Colin Sutherland, a classmate from her middle school years.
The Seattle Times reported that since Knox returned to the U.S. in 2011 — when her murder conviction was overturned by an Italian court — everyday milestones like engagement have helped her return to a somewhat normal life.
Knox was previously imprisoned in Italy for four years following the 2007 murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher.
Sutherland reportedly wrote to her to keep her company while behind bars. Then, after her return, he moved across the country from New York to Seattle to be closer to her.
Knox and her former Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, have been in and out of court since 2007. The pair dated for only a week before Kercher's death by stabbing, and have undergone a trial and two appeals, being found guilty, not guilty, then guilty again.
The case continues to wind its way through the labyrinthine Italian court system, and Knox could face extradition to Italy in March, when another decision comes down.
Until then, she appears to be focused on her fiancee, as well as her job as a cub reporter for the West Seattle Herald. The Times reports that she also works at a local bookstore.
A controversial movie about the life and murder of Meredith Kercher debuted this past fall, and Knox's lawyers said they would be reviewing it to see if it hurt Knox's image. That too seems to have passed, as no reports have emerged saying they've filed claims against it.
