A $17.50 bottle of whisky has been honored as one of the top drinks in a coveted competition that put some of the best spirits to the test.

Each year The Spirits Business holds the Scotch Whisky Masters in an effort to determine the best spirits in the land.

So, when a group of judges gathered in London recently to take part in a blind tasting of some of the finest blends, nobody was expecting discount supermarket Aldi to feature among the 19 entrants to receive awards.

Imagine the surprise when judges announced that the German chain's whisky was receiving not one, but two gold medals.

In the age-statement blends category, Aldi's Highland Black 8-year-old Scotch was one of three products to earn a gold medal, USA Today noted.

The whisky, with its hints of heather, strawberry leaf and lemon oil, sells in the U.K. for 12.99 pounds, which is roughly $17.32.

Meanwhile, in the Islay single malts category, Aldi's Glen Marnoch Islay Single Malt received a gold medal along with one other brand.

This particular whisky sells in the U.K. for 17.49 pounds, which is about $23.32.

"This was a small category but the whiskies had a lot of variation in style and character," said Billy Abbott, who sat on the judging panel, according to The Spirits Business. "They went from the new school, with lots of cask manipulation, to the old school tropical fruit flavors that are coming back."

Aldis managing director of buying in the U.K. said they were proud of the results.

"This is the second year that our Highland Black Scotch Whisky has been voted best in the world and we are thrilled it has performed so well again!" she said, according to Insider.

Last year the supermarket chain won 77 accolades for its spirits and was also awarded the "Own Brand Spirits Range of the Year" title at the International Spirits Challenge.

Unfortunately, these drinks may not be available on the U.S. as it is illegal in many states for grocery stores to sell alcohol.

However, the accolades come as the German grocery chain intends to expand into the U.S. market and will help boost the company's image.

Last year Aldi announced plans to invest $3.4 billion to build up its store base to 2,500 by 2022 in the U.S.

By the end of the year, the chain hopes to add another 400 stores while also forking out $1.6 billion to remodel 1,300 of them.
