An Aldi customer in Cornwall found half a rat inside a package of frozen vegetables, leading to a recall of the product, at least in England, but no word on the 1,600 Aldi stores in the United States.

The German budget supermarket chain has recalled 38,000 packages of the Four Seasons Mixed Vegetables after Pat Bateman, 60, said she found rat parts in one packet that she was feeding to her two-year-old granddaughter, London's The Sun on Sunday reported.

Bateman, who lives with her husband in Liskeard, said she had finished feeding her granddaughter when she saw something at the bottom of the near-empty bag that appeared out of place.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I pulled it out," Bateman said, per The Sun. "It just looked like half a rat. It had fur on it. I showed my husband and because it was frozen we left it to defrost before taking another look at it.”

"I went straight back to our local Aldi where I got it from and although the manager was very nice – he just said I would get ($42) off my food shop. I didn't think he had taken it very seriously so I went home, took some pictures and sent it off to Aldi head office," Bateman continued.

Bateman told The Sun that the family had eaten most of the bag of vegetables before finding the rat parts.

"I have had two offers for compensation after they assured me that there was no infestation where the veg was grown, but I don't think ($700) is enough," Bateman told The Sun. "It's a wonder none of us ended up physically ill."

Aldi said in a statement, according to Sky News, that the product was supplied by Agrifreeze in Belgium and it had stopped selling it per further investigation.

"We have suspended all orders from this production site whilst we investigate this matter," the company said, per Sky News.

Founded in 1961 in Germany, the discount grocer has its U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Illinois, according to its website. Media reports did not say if U.S. Aldi stores were affected by the recall.
