Aldean Performed Petty's 'I Won't Back Down' for 'SNL' Cold Open

Jason Aldean performed the late Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' hit "I Won't Back Down" during the "Saturday Night Live" cold open in a tribute to those killed and injured during the mass shooting in Las Vegas last Sunday that killed 58 people and injured another 500.

The emotional performance by Aldean, who was performing at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas when gunfire rained on his audience allegedly from Stephen Pollock from the nearby Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, was greeted with enthusiastic applause.

Petty, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, died on Monday from cardiac arrest at a Los Angeles hospital, a day after the shooting, CNN reported.

"This week we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in American history," Aldean said in a brief monologue before performing. "Like everyone I'm struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal. So many people are hurting.

"… We hurt for you and we hurt with you, but you can be sure that we're gonna walk through these tough times together every step of the way. … Because when America is at its best, our bond and our spirit is unbreakable," Aldean continued.

It was one of the rare times a musical performance was used in "Saturday Night Live's" cold open. Producers did the same when the show returned after the Sept. 11 tragedy in 2001, when Paul Simon performed the Simon and Garfunkel hit "The Boxer" with New York City firefighters and police on stage, the broadcaster noted, National Public Radio reported.

Authorities continued to examine evidence left behind by Paddock in his hotel room after he apparently took his own life as police closed in during the Oct. 1 shooting, but a motive for the shooting spree has remained elusive, CNN reported.

Many on social media appeared to appreciate Aldean's tribute to the shooting victims and Petty.
