Albuquerque Toddler Shoots Parents After Finding Loaded Gun in Purse

An Albuquerque toddler shot his parents accidentally over the weekend after finding a loaded handgun in his mother's purse.

The 3-year-old boy reportedly squeezed off one shot in a second floor motel room around 2 p.m. Saturday at the America's Best Value Inn. According to the Albuquerque Journal, the bullet struck the father in the right buttock, exited from his hip, and then hit the mother in the arm. Both parents — including the mother, who is eight months pregnant — are expected to survive.

New Mexico's Children, Youth, and Families Department took custody of the toddler and another child who was in the motel room for at least 48 hours, Albuquerque Police Department officer Simon Drobik told the newspaper. He said the department will recommend to the district attorney's office that felony criminal negligence charges be filed against the parents.

"The child did the damage, but it was because of the negligence of the adults that the child was able to do this," Drobik said, without identifying the names of the parents. "If you are going to be a gun owner, you need to lock it up and keep it safe, especially around children."

KRQE-TV reported that the father was taken from the scene by an ambulance to a hospital after the incident for treatment.

"That's scary, you need to keep your guns put up and you need to have locks on them," Robb Robillard, a motel guest, told KRQE-TV. "I think everybody should have the right to own them, but you need a lock them too, especially when kids are around."

Authorities told the station that animal control officers also arrived at the motel to remove two pit bulls.

Drobik said the situation could have been deadly and the parents were fortunate that it did not turn out worse. The father was eventually released from the hospital late Saturday while the woman was being monitored there because of her pregnancy.

In December, a 29-year-old Idaho mother died after her 2-year-old son grabbed a gun from her purse in a shopping cart at a Wal-Mart and fired the weapon, striking her accidently, according to CNN.
