Albino Buck: 11-Year-Old Hunter Kills Rare Deer in Michigan

An 11-year-old Michigan hunter bagged a rare albino deer with a crossbow, earning him the bragging rights of a lifetime.

Gavin Dingman of Howell, Michigan, was hunting with his father when they spotted the deer.

The sixth-grader took aim with his crossbow. He recalls being nervous, the Livingston Daily News said, but with his father’s encouragement, Gavin double-lunged and took the shot from about 30 yards.

Mick Dingman said he had total confidence in his son, who last year shot a six-point buck "straight through the heart" with a crossbow.

"He kind of feels like a rock star right now. Everyone is calling, all of the hunting shows and hunting magazines," Mick Dingman told the Livingston Daily News.

Gavin will be rewarded for his albino buck with one of the rarest trophies in the country. The family is splurging on having a taxidermist create a full-body mount of the deer.

Albino deer are extremely rare. In 2013, USA Today published a report finding that albino deer are born in one of every 20,000 births. Some biologists, however, say albino deer births are even more rare.
