Al Roker has lost 40 lbs in just months while following the controversial keto diet, People magazine reported.

The "Today" co-host raved about the high-fat, low-carb program on the show to Savannah Guthrie.  The best part, he said, was that his cholesterol levels were good despite common concerns that the keto diet can elevate them.

Roker has been promoting the diet widely since he started seeing results. He regularly posts photos of his meals to Instagram and as People noted, is not shy to challenge critics on Twitter.

Many experts have stated that the diet poses numerous health risks. A medically reviewed report by Everyday Health noted that the diet could cause muscle loss, dehydration, nutrient deficiencies while putting strain on the kidneys.

Other experts have refuted these claims.

Writing for the Harvard Health Blog, Marcelo Campos, M.D., said there was "solid evidence" that the keto diet posed health benefits such as weight loss, improved blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes and even a reduction in seizures in children.

"A ketogenic diet could be an interesting alternative to treat certain conditions, and may accelerate weight loss," Campos noted. "But it is hard to follow and it can be heavy on red meat and other fatty, processed, and salty foods that are notoriously unhealthy."

Addressing the conflicting reports, Roker said that it was about what works for the individual.

"There’s science on both sides that says it’s not a great idea and science that says it is a good idea," he said, according to People. "I think it’s up to people — with their doctor, with their medical professional — [to make their own decision]."
