Al Matthews, a former Marine and actor best known for his role in the 1986 sci-fi horror film "Aliens," was found dead in his home in Spain over the weekend, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
A neighbor alerted emergency services Sunday, who certified the 75-year-old's death, although official causes will only be determined by an autopsy, El Pais reported.
Matthews' acting career included appearances in several movie titles such as "Superman III," "The Fifth Element" and "Tomorrow Never Dies," but it was his unforgettable performance as Sgt. Apone in "Aliens" that defined his career.
A vet himself, Matthews served almost six years in the Marine Corps in Vietnam, and was honored with 13 combat awards and two Purple Hearts, THR noted.
Matthews believed his time with the Marines helped his performance in "Aliens."
"I was the only person in the movie not pretending to be a Marine, in fact I taught the other actors how to look and act," he said in an interview with the Elegant Astronaut. "Mr. Cameron was pleased with my input, in fact he said to me, he had no idea I was that good, had he known, my part would have been bigger."
Matthews also dabbled in music, reaching number 16 on the U.K. Singles Chart in 1975 with a song named "Fool," and he worked in television and hosted a show on BBC Radio 1, El Pais reported.
