Airstream announced Monday it is expanding production, including building a new plant in Ohio, to meet increasing demand for its RVs.

The company delivered a record number of RVs in 2017, CNBC reported, and plans to invest $40 million and hire 300 new employees as it ramps up production with the new facility.

"We need this. Demand is strong and growing," CEO and President Bob Wheeler told CNBC. "This expansion will allow us to increase our capacity by 50 percent."

Wheeler said Airstream’s 2017 deliveries were eight times as large as in 2009 during the recession, CNBC reported. Exact sales numbers were not available.

"All arrows are pointing in the right direction," Wheeler continued. "Fuel prices are relatively low, there’s strong credit availability, and consumer debt is manageable right now."

According to the Recreation Vehicles Industry Association, sales of all RVs went up 9.6 percent to 472,200 last year, an all-time high, CNBC reported. The organization expects 2018 to surpass last year’s numbers.

The existing Airstream plant in Jackson Center, Ohio, employs 900 workers and is running out of space to produce the number of RVs needed. Ground on the new plant will be broken in May and it is expected to begin production in 2019, according to a news release. The new facility will be 750,000 square feet and will be completely powered by renewable energy credits.

The existing facility will be used to build Airstream’s motorized touring coaches, and a training center will be a part of the new facility that will enable Airstream salespeople to meet and get training.

"The workforce here in Shelby County is second to none," Wheeler said in the news release. "We couldn’t be happier reaffirming our 65-plus year commitment to Jackson Center."
