Bronx cop Ahmd Ayoubi was named a candidate for the New York Daily News’ Hometown Hero award this week after saving the life of a man bleeding to death by applying the perfect tourniquet.
The incident took place last month, when muggers attacked an unnamed man on the corner of Bronx Blvd. and Duncomb Ave. in Williamsbridge, the Daily News reported.
After demanding he hand over his money, the culprits instead fled the scene with his bottle of iced tea.
The victim’s main artery was nicked during the confrontation so, when Ayoubi and his partner arrived at the scene, they found the man collapsed on the ground and bleeding out.
Fortunately, Ayoubi had been trained on the correct way to apply a tourniquet three weeks prior to the incident and immediately sprang into action.
“The training just kicked in,” the 28-year-old Bronx cop said. “If I didn’t have the training, I probably would have been a chicken without a head. The training kept me calm and collected.”
Ayoubi expertly applied a tourniquet that saved the man’s life, and then hopped into the ambulance to ride with him to the hospital.
Doctors were impressed by the cop’s quick thinking, which resulted in the victim being released from hospital two days later.
“The tourniquet had been applied perfectly,” said Dr. Sheldon Teperman, head of trauma for Jacobi Medical Center, according to the Daily News. “This thing was bleeding like a fire hydrant. There is no question that this officer saved this man’s life.”
Ayoubi’s actions also received praise from the New York Police Department, which applauded his “outstanding work” in a Facebook post.
“His on scene application of recently certified Tourniquet Training saved the life of a heavily bleeding patient,” the department said.
The simple process of applying a tourniquet correctly is an invaluable skill and law enforcements are tapping in to their training to save lives.
In a separate incident last month, four NYPD cops saved a woman’s life after she was stabbed several times by her boyfriend, also by applying a tourniquet with a t-shirt, The New York Post reported.
