African Sushi: Trout From Lesotho Gobbled Across Japan

By    |   Monday, 24 Nov 2014 09:05 AM

African sushi is growing in popularity across Japan as the small, landlocked nation of Lesotho continues each year to export more and more of its trout to the island nation thousands of miles away.

Reuters reported that the trade route is a unique one that benefits both partners greatly, illustrating the hyper-efficiencies borne of the new global market. Traditionally, nearly all of Japan's fish is imported to Tokyo's massive fish market, Tsukiji, but fish farmers in southern Africa have for the last few years supplied their trout direct to Asian supermarket chains – primarily CGC.

"We managed to bypass Tsukiji because of the quality of the trout and the relationship we built and the approach we took and so we went straight into retail," said project manager Stuart Slabbert.

By cutting out the middlemen, trout mongers in Lesotho — a mountainous country surrounded by South Africa — retain more revenue from each sale, and the purchasing Japanese supermarkets get a better price.

"The average is about $5 a kilogramme. We get the upside of that, we are getting the highest price globally from our Japanese client," said Slabbert.

This is especially important for laborers in Lesotho, who've been at a loss for work as gold, platinum, and other mines have become tapped out or unworkable because of local unrest.

The fish farming industry also helps to diversity the small country's portfolio of industries. The economy is primarily based on subsistence farming, and the exporting of water to its only neighbor, South Africa.

In 2012, 550 tons of trout were exported by Highlands Trout, a company based thousands of feet above sea level in the Maluti Mountains where temperatures are cool, and ideal for raising fish. This year, it expects to expand to over 2,000 tons, and eventually work toward 10,000.
