Adam "Pacman" Jones, a Cincinnati Bengals cornerback with a knack for staying in trouble, entered a not guilty plea Tuesday on an assault charge after police said he struck a woman last week, according to USA Today.

Jones, 29, was released on his own recognizance. Not guilty pleas during arraignments are commonplace and allow the case to move toward trial or a plea agreement. The Cincinnati Enquirer stated that messages left for Jones' agent were not immediately returned.

The newspaper said police arrested Jones for allegedly punching Shannon Wesley, 34, during a verbal altercation late June 5 outside of a downtown Cincinnati bar. Peter Schaffer, Jones' agent, said two women approached him seeking a photograph with the football star. Things got ugly when Jones declined.

"The last thing he wants is a picture with two women showing up on Twitter or Facebook or some other form of social media," Schaffer told the Enquirer. Jones is married. "Given what Adam has been through with the legal process, he has been incredibly positive and believes he will be vindicated."

A surveillance video allegedly from the bar shows someone believed to be Jones swinging at a woman. The tape has made its rounds through social media, including TMZ.

According to TMZ, Jones tweeted after his arrest: "Just got arrested for protecting myself . . . I will not let this break me or change what I have work so hard for . . ."

Jones, the talented but troubled defensive back out of West Virginia, has played for the Tennessee Titans and the Dallas Cowboys. He is in his fourth year with the Cincinnati Bengals after spending two seasons away from football.

Jones' most notorious case was his involvement in a shooting at a Las Vegas strip club in 2007 where a gunman shot two club employees, according to The Associated Press. Last year, a Nevada court ruled that Jones must pay $11 million in damages.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Jones for the 2007 season for his violations against the league's personal conduct policy.
