Aaron Hernandez is being investigated for gun trafficking, CNN reported on Monday, citing a source close to the investigation.

The former New England Patriots tight end is reportedly being investigated for illegally transporting a weapon across state lines. The investigation comes after the recent discovery of an assault-style rifle found in a vehicle Hernandez rented in Florida that was found in Massachusetts.

When asked by CNN about the potential for additional charges in the case against Hernandez, both the Massachusetts State Police and the district attorney's office declined to comment.

Hernandez was a star tight end of the New England Patriots when he was arrested on June 26 for the alleged execution-style murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, whose bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial area near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, Mass.

Hernandez was cut by the team within hours of his arrest and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and related firearms charges.

Also indicted were Hernandez's friend Carlos Ortiz on a charge of accessory to murder and Hernandez's cousin Tanya Singleton on a charge of conspiracy to commit accessory. According to authorities, Lloyd was picked up by Hernandez, Wallace, and Ortiz shortly before he was killed on June 17.

Hernandez's fiancée Shayanna Jenkins was also arraigned earlier this month on perjury charges in connection with the missing murder weapon.

In addition to the execution-style killing of Lloyd, Hernandez is also being investigated by another grand jury for an unsolved 2012 double homicide of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado outside a Boston nightclub.

The killing of Abreu and Furtado involved a sport utility vehicle pulling up next to their car, at which point the occupant fired, killing them both, the Boston Globe reported.

The vehicle used in the shooting was subsequently found at Hernandez's uncle's home in Bristol, Conn., WHDH-TV reported.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty in this case as well.
