Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez, who's in jail on murder charges, was involved in an altercation with another inmate, authorities said Wednesday.

The ex-New England Patriots tight end fought briefly around noon Tuesday in a common area of the Bristol County House of Correction in Dartmouth. Bernie Sullivan, a spokesman for the Bristol County Sheriff's Office, told Fox Sports that neither inmate was seriously hurt.

"We will be studying video and proceeding with interviews to determine why and how the incident took place to determine whether internal discipline or criminal charges are warranted," said Massachusetts Sheriff Thomas Hodgson, according to ABC News.

Because he is a high-profile inmate, Hernandez, 24, lives in segregated housing with only a few other prisoners.

The 24-year-old has pleaded not guilty to murder in the June 17 death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, who was fatally shot near Hernandez's $1.2 million home in North Attleborough, Mass. Odin had been dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee.

Hernandez is accused of orchestrating Odin's killing by calling two cohorts for assistance on the night of June 16. Court documents say Hernandez was texting Lloyd to arrange a meeting for later that night, Fox Sports reported. The two men who allegedly helped Hernandez that night, Carlos Ortiz, 28, and Ernest Wallace Jr., 42, have been charged as accessories to murder.

Hernandez's fiancee Shayanna Jenkins has also been indicted on a perjury charge, and his cousin, Tanya Singleton, has been charged with conspiracy and contempt.

Hernandez is also a person of interest in the investigation of a July 16, 2012, drive-by shooting in South Boston in which two men died and a third man was wounded. Police believe Hernandez "may have been the shooter" in that incident, according to court documents.
